Calvin deRuyter
Calvin deRuyter's unconventional approach to
using watercolor -- painting
directly from the tube and applying with bristle brushes, often
scrubbing
the pigment -- has garnered him attention not only for his art, but also
for
his unique technique in creating that art. He considers himself
primarily a
"colorist" with influence from impressionism and
expressionism. He is a
board member of the NorthStar Watercolor Society and a co-chair of it's
annual "Art on A Line" at the State Fair Grounds. He is also a
charter
member of "Uncharted Water", a group of 5 unique watermedia
artists who like
to explore the limits of watercolor medium. He has won numerous awards
since
2003, including an award at the Red River National Juried Exhibition,
and 3
"Best of Show" awards from the NorthStar Watercolor Society,
the Minnesota
Watercolor Society, and the Hennepin Artists of Robbin Gallery. This
spring
he was the Featured Artist for a one-person exhibit at the LOOK Gallery,
Marshall Fields Southdale, in Edina. Calvin resides and owns a
publishing
business in the Twin Cities.
